National Conference for Nuclear Medicine Theranostics

JAPANESE / ENGLISH

Reasons for Participation in ...
the National Conference for Nuclear Medicine Theranostics

Hope of people with cancer and their loved one is the establishment of accurate diagnosis and the development of effective therapy for each of patients. Nuclear medicine theranostics which combine both therapeutic and diagnostic capabilities has potential to propel the biomedical field toward personalized medicine. However, regarding the use of radiation in the medical field, it is regulated by the Act on Prevention of Radiation Hazards due to Radioisotopes, etc. and the Medical Care Act / the Law on Securing Quality, Efficacy and Safety of Products Including Pharmaceuticals and Medical devices, and some are double regulated. Therefore, in oder to realize better medical in Japan, we need to discuss different issues faced by nuclear medicine as problems for each Japanese citizen.

For passing or preventing or improving legislation, grassroots advocacy can be one of the most influential tools that organizations and associations have. Grassroots advocacy differs from traditional lobbying, which brings arguments for or against a specific measure directly to legislations and government officials. The goal of grassroots advocacy is usually to reach the general public and ask them to contact their legislators and government officials. Particularly, grassroots advocacy increase the likelihood that legislators and government officials will pay attention.

Traditional lobbying by individual organization remain influential ways to reach members of congress, but increasingly, the Japanese Society of Nuclear Medicine(JSMN), the Japan Radioisotope Association(JRIA), the Pacreatic Cancer Action Network Japan(PanCAN-Japan) and the Cancer Support Community Japan(CSC-Japan) look to supplement those efforts with grassroots advocacy efforts. Therefore, we established the National Conference for Nuclear Medicine Theranostics as the first grassroots advocacy in Japan on December 1, 2016. Challenges surrounding nuclear medicine will need to be debated from various aspects, including legal regulation, RI management and international considerations. Therefore, we intend to conduct the debate across different organizations and associations.
